At King Kalakaua Electric Cooperative, we are dedicated to providing reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy solutions to our community. As a member-owned organization, we prioritize innovation, environmental stewardship, and service excellence to power the future of our island. Together, we’re building a brighter, greener tomorrow.
Our Vision
Our goal is to transition Maui’s electric utility from the traditional investor-owned utility (IOU) model to a member-owned, nonprofit cooperative. This means Maui’s energy infrastructure would be owned and governed by the very people it serves—not by shareholders or mainland investors
Why a Co-op?
Electric cooperatives operate on a different set of values than IOUs:
No shareholders. No profits. Revenue is reinvested in the system or returned to members.
Local control. A community-elected board makes decisions in the public interest—not for private investors.
Community-driven priorities. Residents have a voice in how energy is generated, delivered, and priced.
Regulated oversight. Like HECO, the co-op would be regulated by the Hawai‘i Public Utilities Commission (PUC), which ensures fair rates and reliable service.
